The Ofsted framework for inspection recognises the importance of school leaders ‘leading the learning’ and, by definition, ‘leading the curriculum’. This doesn’t mean headteachers must write the curriculum, but they must know its contents and the reasoning behind the decisions.

The process of managing curricular change requires careful planning and an acceptance that it will take time to embed. The most successful schools often pilot elements of change with a few people to iron out potential problems and develop a small team of ambassadors who can work with colleagues. Great schools are always evaluating and revising their curriculum.
