Whilst the Early Years Framework is not split up into specific subject disciplines like the National Curriculum for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, we have set out the EYFS units here that link to music to support both teachers and subject leaders with making links across the Learning Challenge Curriculum.

The following units link to the Early Learning Goal of ‘Being Imaginative and Expressive’ which states that:

Children at the expected level of development will:

• Invent, adapt and recount narratives and stories with peers and their teacher.
• Sing a range of well-known nursery rhymes and songs.
• Perform songs, rhymes, poems and stories with others, and – when appropriate –
  try to move in time with music.

These units are designed to be flexible in order to support learning best for your children. Some units you may only decide to spend a week on, whereas others you might spend two or three weeks exploring. In some cases it may be an area you wish to explore with the children for longer. The units are filled with ideas for useful texts to promote literacy skills alongside activity suggestions which support purposeful learning experiences, including for continuous provision.

** Some units are marked with an N, intended for 3- and 4-year-olds, but can be used with Reception-aged children at the beginning of the school year or with less mature Reception-aged children at any time.

Music – Listening attentively, move to, and talk about, music expressing their feelings and responses How can I learn to sing in tune? What does music make me feel like? How can I sing like a movie star? What would it be like to perform in The Lion King?
