Whilst the Early Years Framework is not split up into specific subject disciplines like the National Curriculum for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, we have set out the EYFS units here that link to science to support both teachers and subject leaders with making links across the Learning Challenge Curriculum.

The following units link to the Early Learning Goal of ‘The Natural World’ which states that:

Children at the expected level of development will:

• Explore the natural world around them, making observations and drawing
  pictures of animals and plants.
• Know some similarities and differences between the natural world around
  them and contrasting environments, drawing on their experiences and what
  has been read in class.
• Understand some important processes and changes in the natural world
  around them, including the seasons and changing states of matter.

These units are designed to be flexible in order to support learning best for your children. Some units you may only decide to spend a week on, whereas others you might spend two or three weeks exploring. In some cases it may be an area you wish to explore with the children for longer. The units are filled with ideas for useful texts to promote literacy skills alongside activity suggestions which support purposeful learning experiences, including for continuous provision.

** Some units are marked with an N, intended for 3- and 4-year-olds, but can be used with Reception-aged children at the beginning of the school year or with less mature Reception-aged children at any time.
