The material in this section has been produced to help schools and academies to have a Design and Technology curriculum in place that provides challenge and a broad coverage.

The progression map at the beginning is a recommended way of ensuring pupils’ progress from EYFS through to Year 6.
It is set out under the following headings:
– Designing
– Making
– Evaluating
– Technical Knowledge
– Food Technology

This way of working is a suggestion which would help pupils meet the substantive knowledge and disciplinary knowledge needed to help them be proficient in DT. There is also a link below which presents a guide to what a DT book should look like. This example has been included with thanks to Cloudside Academy in Nottingham (part of the L.E.A.D. Academy Trust).

Each recommended unit follows the same process, outlined below. Additional, or alternative units are suggested at the end of this document.

SUGGESTED RESOURCES

We have included below a list of suggested resources that you MAY choose to use to deliver the units of learning for Design and Technology in each year group.

It is important to understand that these units are designed to be adaptable. You may want to alter the product being made, either completely or in terms of the way it is made and resources you wish to use.
The suggested resources are exactly that – suggested. It is up to subject leaders and individual teachers to determine the exact resources that are required to teach the units effectively.
It is recommended that teachers create their own prototype of what the children are going to create over the course of a unit (especially if it is something not tried before), to ensure that they have the right materials and understand the key processes for teaching the unit effectively.
